Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

I always dread when April and May roll around. Why? It's season finale time and every year I complain about not being ready for my shows to go on hiatus. There are some good shows that are on during the summer, Unreal comes to mind but that will be for another post. What I usually do during the summer is rewatch shows I already enjoy or discover new shows. With Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Video, there are more options than ever to watch new shows.

I wanted to watch "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" when I first heard about the show, but I had too many other shows to watch at that time. Netflix just recently add the complete first season of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. The show follows Rebecca Bunch (Rachel Bloom) as she moves from New York City to West Covina, California to follow her teenage love Josh. While there she comes to fall in love with the people and realizes this was the happiest she had been in a long time.

The main reason I wanted to watch this show is my love of musicals. Throughout each episode, there are at least three musical numbers that explain what the characters are going through. It is easy to see that Rachel Bloom, who also created the show, loves musicals. If you like musical theater or have heard popular musical numbers, you will be able to recognize that the songs are inspired by other musicals. Songs influence from "Oklahoma," "Les Mis," and "Hamilton" can be heard throughout the show. The songs will get stuck in your head and make you laugh. I enjoy how the songs can be about Rebecca's big breasts to helping the town of West Covina.

After watching the show, I also grew to appreciate how people with mental illnesses are treated. Rebecca deals with anxiety and depression. While there are some laughs related to what she's going through, they also show Rebecca trying to take control of her depression. She takes medication and sees a therapist to begin to heal. The show also shows that she is a successful lawyer while also having depression and anxiety.

Along with the musical numbers and real life issues, Rebecca is in a love triangle with Josh (Vincent Rodriguez III) and Josh's friend Greg (Santino Fontana). You may recognize Greg's voice as Hans from Frozen. While Josh is the person she moved for, I found myself rooting for Greg. I don't want to give too much away so you'll have something to look forward to.

After reading this I hope you go out and watch the show! It's 18 hour long episodes. Let me know what you think/like/didn't like. I enjoy discussing other people's opinions of the show.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend returns for its second season on the CW on Friday, October 21, 2016. Check your local listing for times.

Introduction

I've decided to start blogging again after many years of stopping. Lately I have felt the need to be creative and I think this blog will allow me a place to release that energy.

This blog will focus on my thoughts related to the entertainment industry (Movies and Television) and books. I may write reviews or talk about why a certain movie is important to me. I'm also a history nerd so there may be some sprinkling of history facts.

I'm an open book so if you ever have any questions, just ask! Your questions could inspire me to write a post answering your question. Overall, I want this to be a place for my thoughts and for readers to join in the conversation. I hope you enjoy this as much as I will. Until next time.
